VW Lupo beginning in Frankfurt and 10,000 € in basic prices
The end of the gestation of Erlangen Up! approach. This concept comes in several variants foreshadowed an affordable small car for several brands of the VW brand but also to Wolfsburg, who saw this car in an estate to the Lupo. It happens very soon.
According to Automotive News, Volkswagen will present at the Frankfurt Motor Show in October 2011 the production version of the Up!, a concept in 2007 that if one refers to the terminology used by VW for his concepts was a foreshadowing of the future Lupo.
The first variant will be unveiled 4 seats, 3 doors equipped with a new family of engines 3 cylinder diesel and gasoline. Deliveries will begin in late 2011, following the salon and have a self starting price of 10,000 euros. When asked whether this Up! Serial use of twin engines as the Fiat 500, Ulrich Hackenberg, head of development for VW said:
“It’s a very nice engine, but we must work first on 3 cylinders before considering smaller. ”
The Up! series will be manufactured at the plant in Bratislava in Slovakia. In addition to other versions (including 5-door), she will also receive a DSG then electrically powered by 2013. To reduce design costs, the Up! series will have its engine positioned at the front as opposed to the concept that had door-to-rear overhang. We can therefore think that the engines used for Up! will also be given to the Polo then.
This tiny Volkswagen, which has not been a direct descendant care for her a very nice little face and a perky face which, if not excite the crowd, make it still very pleasant to contemplate. Mechanically, it is nothing more than a Seat Arosa – it also left no descendants – recarrossée, let alone the front and tailgate are different. On board, it has a dashboard also specific. It is an alternative to the Renault Twingo, but unlike its rival French, it does not have a bold design that maximize the living space, or alter the space reserved for passengers and luggage. This very nice little German is thus a very classic car in its definition, and especially living for two. No more!
What you can try
Compactness: its limited length to 3.53 m, this little car slips easily into town and pulls just as easily.
The budget of use: it is a reflection of the size of the car reduces.
Driving: Lupo offers an easy grip. And visibility is good. The steering is extremely light and easy to handle.
Driving behavior: it shows balanced.
Petrol engines: 1.0 except entry level, it is mechanical rather pleasant, efficient and simple.
Equipment: It is complete in all. Options and Comfort – rare – Carat versions are particularly well endowed.
The two front seats: they are pleasant to occupy.
The dashboard: quite original with its two meter long sheltered two caps, it pleases the majority.
What may make you hesitate
Livability: The 8 cm from a Renault Twingo absolutely no benefit to the interior space, which is significantly reduced. In addition, there is no possibility of modulating the space between the trunk and rear habitable volume.
The chest: little, it will require to be loaded on any package and any case requiring a little big.
Sound isolation: a deficit at all levels. The engines are poorly insulated against noise, which is particularly disadvantageous to diesels. The wheel arches are also poorly insulated: road noise and noise in the cabin lift in the rain. On diesels, vibration on the seats and the shifter.
Buy / Quote
New, it has been sold for more than its close cousin, the Seat Arosa. This price difference can be found in time, which makes the purchase less attractive than a Seat Arosa, engine and equipment equal. That said, in absolute terms, demand is not very strong and prices are not exaggerated.
Appetite quite reasonable for the petrol versions (except for entry-level engine 1.0). Both diesels are distinguished by sobriety quite interesting, especially the 1.4 TDI.
Fairly low price, like the template of the car.
Rates slightly higher, with some excess on some mechanical parts.
Maintenance visits every 10 000 to 20 000 km depending on the version (and every year more than if the mileage limit has been reached). Timing belt change every 120,000 km. The original 1.0 engine Skoda has no timing belt but a chain: no need periodic replacement.
Volkswagen’s reputation was initially impressed. Yet this Lupo marketed specifically during the difficult years of the brand in this chapter has not escaped some weaknesses fairly repetitive and totally identified.However, it has a very good initial design and has not inherited, overall mechanical components most prone to chronic damage. It is one of Volkswagen fairly reliable during this period 1998 -2004. Which does not address some points before buying.
Heavy breakdowns and immobilizing
1.0 petrol engine (original Skoda). Possible infiltration of oil into the cooling system or coolant flowing through the oil. In this case, the head gasket is replaced. Also some cases loose bolt in the factory.
Engine v. 1.4 16 On models manufactured until November 2001, concern about the timing belt tensioner and risk of rupture of the timing belt. This concern did exist but it only affects a small number of models.
Engine v. 1.4 16 On models manufactured until November 2000, the risk of icing oil breather system (allows oil vapors to be sucked to balance the oil pressure in the engine and prevent burning of the lubricant which would cause a source pollution). This risk occurs only in cold weather (when the temperature drops several consecutive hours below – 8 °). Serious consequences: possible blown engine (if the oil is pumped) and, in extreme cases, fire. Remedy: installing a breather heated by electrical resistance (available since November 2000).
1.4 TDI engine. On models manufactured until June 2002, marked weakness of the turbo: risk of breakage from low mileage (from 25 000 km). Caused by weakness of turbo bearings. Remedy: Replacement of the turbo. Many substitutions were made penny guaranteed. A priori, on the models in this critical period, turbos, which held pus 60 000 km are free from worry.
Automatic transmission. Cases of serious failure, requiring a complete replacement of the box.
Starter. On models manufactured until November 2002 (and especially those made until November 2000), the contactor may be stuck Neiman. This may burn out the starter.
Other failures or weaknesses
1.0 petrol engine (original Skoda). Difficulty in cold starting. Caused by a defect of the temperature sensor coolant.
1.0 petrol engine (original Skoda). Possible attacks to strokes. Caused by defective ignition coils and / or high voltage son.
Engines 1.0 and 1.4. Concerns water pump from 90 000 km.
Motors v. 1.4 16 Sometimes unstable idle. Remedy: Reprogramming of throttle body.
Engine 1.4 16 v 75 hp. On models manufactured until November 2001, the battery is low resistance and is often out of service after 2-3 years.
Engine 1.6 16 v (GTI). A jerk-chronic speeding. Remedy: try reprogramming the throttle body, but the result will be only partial.
1.7 SDI engine. A few cases of failure of the injection pump.
1.4 TDI engine. Blip at the start and stop the engine.
Manual transmission. On versions 1.0 or 1.4 in essence, a few cases of breakage of transmission were identified. They surivennent generally from 50 000 km.
Clutch. On models manufactured until December 1999, the shifting is sometimes made difficult by the absence of sliding of the clutch disc imperfect.
Clutch pedal. On models manufactured until November 1998, the clutch can be hard to press down cold.
Direction. Possible noise (hum) of the steering during tight maneuvers.
Direction. Tendency of management to take a slight clearance with age, from 100 000 km.
Front brakes. The wear of front brake discs is faster on the versions equipped with ventilated discs.
Rear drum brakes. Gross braking.
Sealing. On models manufactured until December 2000, few cases of water inlet from the top of the front doors
Windshield wipers. On models manufactured until December 2000, Slam wiper left when he arrived near the amount of the windshield.
Joints. On models manufactured until November 2000, the small circle of felt seal on the front windows is insecure and can be deformed.

Malfunctioning electronic / functions on
Central locking. On models manufactured until February 1999, failure or malfunction as possible: lock hangs, does not obey the first time or can only be obtained only from “a door.
Power windows. Worries repetitive electric windows, especially on models manufactured until December 2002. Caused by an engine problem and / or mechanism.
Warning indicators. Possible ignition disordered lights on the dashboard (EPC OBD), with no real malfunction.
ABS warning. On models manufactured until February 1999, the inadvertent ignition of ABS control, if not based on a real incident.
Reminder and correction concession
Braking (assistance). On models manufactured until June 2000, possible worsening of depression of the brake booster hose. Consequence: a gradual loss of braking assistance, which, in practice, leads virtually to no longer be able to brake at all. Recall in April 2002: Review and replace the hose if necessary. 12 000 cars in France, 95,000 in total.
